The DCR-TRV280 is this year’s low-end addition to the Sony Digital8 series. What it lacks in manual control options it makes up for in price, and what it lacks in chic packaging it compensates for in ease of use. It’s the only Sony model that does not feature a touch screen LCD; instead control functions are dispersed atop the massive frame–to the user’s ultimate benefit. The camcorder has not evolved from its predecessor, the DCR-TRV260 (original battery code : sony np-qm91d, sony np-qm71d

The Sony DCR-TRV280 is a behemoth and the only Sony camcorder this year to not relocate its menu system to a touch screen LCD. Control is exacted via the panoply of buttons on the camcorder’s body. The measure of control will be limited as well. No manual white balance or shutter speed is offered, and the zoom toggle is disproportionately small.

The imager is the same as all Sony Digital8’s for the last few years: a 1/6” CCD with 290K effective pixels. Under bright light conditions, the DCR-TRV280 reproduced colors with decent accuracy and acceptable noise levels. The colors were, however, somewhat washed. Low light performance was generally poor, but no more so than the performance from its big sister, the DCR-TRV480. A solid 20x optical zoom comes with the DCR-TRV280, as well as a flashy 990x digital zoom, a sad, misleading feature meant to lure in unschooled consumers. (Digital zoom artificially enlarges the picture, distorting it in the process.)

Ease of use is perhaps one of the crucial factors that can lead someone to choose a Digital8 over a MiniDV camcorder. If so, the DCR-TRV280 will not disappoint. Given the lack of manual control options, this camcorder is designed almost exclusively for point-and-shooters. The buttons are all clearly marked for each purpose, and if even these small tasks confuse the user, there is an Easy button on the upper left side that relegates nearly all quality control to the camcorder.

The DCR-TRV280 does not take stills. A step up from the DCR-TRV280 sony np-qm71d, sony np-qm91d )will buy you this feature. Surprisingly, a Widescreen shooting mode is available, though it is not a true 16:9 aspect ratio. Ports on this camcorder include DV, A/V, and USB. Other features include Burn DVD, which allows you to burn the footage onto a computer with a DVD burner or to a DVD recorder. There’s also NightShot, Super NightShot, and Color Slow Shutter, which slows down the shutter speed in low light in order to capture more color information.

Battery life

Sony supplies a NP-FP30 lithium ion battery with the DCR-TRV280. If the user continuously records with the LCD open the camcorder will function for 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 20 seconds. This is slightly less than the time stated in the user manual, which stated an estimated time of 1 hour and 20 minutes. (We use fresh batteries for this test, but bear in mind that as the battery ages its maximum continuous recording time will decrease.)

The Sony DCR-SR45 is a lightweight camcorder with a weight of 350g (without battery). Its dimensions are 76mm wide, 77mm high and 113mm deep). Our review unit was in the usual slick silver and black design. The camcorder has a 2.7-inch wide touch screen and a 40x optical zoom. The zoom enabled microphone captures the audio clearly. Plenty of storage space is provided by its 30 GB storage space. This translates to 7 to 20 hours of recording depending on the quality setting. You can also store photos and videos to a memory slot thanks to a "hybrid stick" which offers a secondary recording option with a memory stick slot that can boost its capacity to 16GB.

The four buttons- zoom in, zoom out, home, start/stop recording are versatile when recording at low angles. It has 2 menu systems; a "Home" menu for all feature settings and an "Options" menu for functions available for video and still images like recording mode, focus and white balance. The dead centre record button lets you start off easily and the dial fits in line with the thumb. Power and activity buttons are above this. It also has a "Quick On" button, which moves it from the standby mode. The "stills" button is located on top. And rocker switch for the zooming lens which allows shutter free close-ups.

Good

All features are up to the standard.

It has a responsive auto focus and good white balance.

Clean appearance with sliding door on the side, where you can find a USB port, an AV out with included cable. Another sliding door on top hides the memory card slot.

"Nightshot" capabilities

Compared to SR65, it has a larger optical zoom.

Bad

The video quality is disappointing. It is unlikable if you are used to the clarity of a HD video. It doesn’t look good even at highest quality setting until you scale it down to You Tube size.

It fails to counterpart mobile phones with maximum image size of 0.3 megapixels.

It cannot capture shake free images and for taking close-ups, tripod is always required as it lacks optical image stabilization.

Performance drop in capturing dim light images.

Sometimes the images are blurred even in LCD screen.

Bottom line

The DCR-SR45 is not better than other entry level cams. The image quality is reasonable but not good enough for most people. It is affordable, but there are even cheaper models with better performances. The total package is up to the standard except for the video quality. It is adequate for beginners and budget shoppers interested in MiniDV.

Produce 2 (New JVC Camcorder)

just a test

Camcorder is no longer a luxury item. Almost every home has one and they form an integral part of every family outing. It is important to choose a camcorder that best suit one’s needs. Most families prefer to use branded ones like Sony Camcoders or Panasonic Camcorders. Samsung camcorders and Sharp camcorders are other brands that are also very popular for their budget models. Whatever be the model, a few aspects need to be analyzed before making a choice.

1. Comfort – Why this has come as the first consideration is because, if the camcorder is not convenient enough to be carried around, most people tend to stop using them. Make sure the camcorder you choose is comfortable to use and operate.

2. Video Quality – Video quality among all market brands should be compared and analyzed before making a purchase. Online camcorder review sites can be a useful resource while trying to get more technical details about video quality and coverage. It is also important to pay special attention to lens quality and zoom coverage and choose carefully from the available varieties. Another important aspect is to understand the best use of natural lighting in camcorders because lighting can give the right feel for the video quality.

3. Audio – Audio functions need to be carefully checked while choosing a camcorder. Make sure that the audio level can be switched between manual and auto modes.

4. Service – This is the most important aspect to consider if you are making a purchase from the maker for the first time. If overlooked, even small problems related to camcorder usage may turn out to be very costly. Make sure that ‘after- sales’ support and service is included in the warranty and also, if they offer worldwide support (may be useful during global travel).

5. Additional Features – Video clip recording is a new feature that is currently available. Check out review sites to get more information on additional features offered by all the models. It is also important to install suitable video software that helps during video preparation.

All these points mentioned here are from a bird’s point of view. It is important to understand the technical specifications of each point and compare model pricing to make the final choice.

My Sony DCR-IP5 MicroMV format video camera died recently. I don’t want to pay to have it fixed (hello Betamax!). The problem is that I have several MicroMV tapes with video on them that I can’t extract. I’m looking for any company/service that can put the video files on DVD if I send them the tapes. Thanks in advance for your sympathy.
