They told all I needed was a USB port, but when I hook it up, nothing comes up.

    MiniDV tape needs firewire to import the video. USB is used only for transferring stills.

    Hard drive based uses USB, but you need to load the drivers that are on the disc in the box and you need to translate the .tod or .mod video files to something your computer can use like .avi or .mov. The instructions are in the manual in the box – or you can download from jvc.com…

    Your JVC dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don’t come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.
