I downloaded them onto my Mac and can’t view the movies on my computer. I was told I need to convert them to something, not sure what or what type of converter, hopefully a free one.

Don’t worry, everything will be solved.
Just give me a little bit more information please.
What camera are you working with?
In what format are your files in?
Don’t worry, I’m sure we can get this prblem solved, just provide me with some more information based on the questions I asked you.
EDIT:
AN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION:
Mpg is a compressive file format that is usually used with HDD camcorders.
One way to get your footage editable is to just simply drag it into iMovie. iMovie should automatically convert it to a .dv format.
Make sure the sound is in sych once the file is converted and inside iMovie. If the audio is out of synch, then tell me, and you and me will find a way to fix the problem.
PS: What I meant by dragging into iMovie, was to open iMovie, and import you mpg footage.
Hope I helped.
