I am trying to edit footage from a sony camera yet it does not work, it says its not in the right format but i’ve tried everything, can anyone help? all answers are greately appreciated. thank you.

the model nmber is HDR-SR8 and when i tried to upload it onto windows movie maker and windows media player it would not work. (for both it did not work)

Which Sony camera have you got and what’s the it that says it’s not in the right format? If you can tell us more about what you’re doing we can probably help you.
Your handycam, if it’s dv tape, using a firewire connection will capture to hard drive in dvRaw format — best quality, uncompressed codec, audio sound attached to the video, huge file size.
I run Linux and my video editor was free — Cinelerra. Also available for the Macs. Cinelerra takes heavy iron to run it.
Time is your enemy with video editing. Experiment with a 5 min test vid to whatever your target is. That is, if you are shooting for a DVD, learn all the steps it takes to get ready to burn a DVD using the 5 min tape.
